This presentation provides an overview of topics related to ASL linguistics geared toward interpreters.

The presentation will cover domains of linguistic structure -- phonology, morphology and syntax -- as well as language acquisition trajectories for children with exposure to language from birth and those with delayed first language exposure. The workshop will include interactive activities in which participants can reflect on the newly presented material and how it can inform their interpreting practice.

Educational Objectives

-Recognize and describe ASL formational parameters (phonemes) and understand typical variation in sign production.

-List typical stages of language acquisition and describe the relationship between formational parameters (phonemes) to markedness.

-Recognize features of bimodal bilingualism and how that may influence your interpretations.
